How Lucky We Are

Today John went to a vegetable exchange. He took limes, tomatoes, oranges, and peppers, and traded them for plums, avocados, apples, pears, and a fig. He also brought home a story.

He hadn’t been to the exchange in a long time. John told the woman who started the exchange that the reason he hadn’t been was that we had a baby and somehow he mentioned that she was born early. Another woman asked him if I went into premature labor. He explained what happened and she related the story of her friend. The friend was in the last weeks of her pregnancy and was having ultrasounds every week for some reason. At the last one, the baby had no heartbeat. It was determined that the baby had died sometime in the previous week. The baby was delivered stillborn. John told me he almost started crying when he heard the story.

We discussed it and I know more than ever just how lucky we are. I cannot image not having Fiona around. We could have been telling that same story had circumstances been slightly different. I feel so blessed that the bradycardia was discovered and that I delivered when I did, even though I did not feel that way at the time.

To end, here are three photos of Fiona from today. In the first two she is doing what she does best – sleep on John. In the second she is in the BOB, wearing her Julbo sunglasses that Alexander, the son of friends of ours, sent her.

We were going to go for a run, but it was so HOT, we just walked around the block. It’s hard to believe it rained cats and dogs just a few days ago.
