The Jade Buddha was on display at a local buddhist temple. Fiona and I took a walk over to the temple to see it. While there, we nursed while looking at it and took photos of some of the other statues. The Jade Buddha is 8.9 feet tall and weighs about 4 tons. It’s a world tour, but its home is in Australia.

Here is a photo of Fiona and her friend Lyla. Lyla is one of the babies who got sick at the same time that Fiona did.
A friend of mine (a mom in my mom’s group) recently had surgery. To help her out, other moms in the group were bringing her lunch and dinner. Fiona and I went to visit on Friday morning, to keep her company and help her out because she can’t lift her son right now and should be taking it easy. Friday night she sent me a text telling me that the whole family (son, husband, and she) was sick. They had fevers and were vomiting. Oh no!
Saturday morning we took an unusually long family nap in the morning – two hours or more. When I woke up, I felt groggy and hung over, even though I haven’t had an alcoholic drink in ages. I knew something was funny. I started to feel really tired and achy as the day wore on, so much so that I couldn’t hold Fiona up after I fed her before bed time. It turns out I had a mild fever, but the chills and aches were strong. When John brought Fiona to bed so I could feed her, she vomited her dinner. I took her to the couch so John could change the sheets, and I nursed her. She vomited again, this time it was a big one. Poor thing.
After that, John held her while I cleaned myself up and crawled back into bed. When she needed to eat in the middle of the night, John got up with me and helped me feed her. I had to side-lie (breast feed while lying down) on the floor because I could hold my head up. Today Fiona was a lot better. A little sluggish and whiny, but she is also teething, so that might explain it. She slept a lot. She also had diarrhea twice.
I have been feeling awful. My stomach is crampy and I feel nauseous. After a nice hot bath, I vomited as well. It seems I ate something with parsley leaves in it. It must be from a burrito I had Friday night. Now I feel a lot better. So far John has not had any symptoms. He’s been a real trooper, taking care of Fiona and me, and doing many loads of laundry.
It turns out that two other moms and babies also got sick after visiting the mother who I am now going to call Patient Zero. One baby has a slight fever and didn’t want to nurse, and the other vomited seven times, then had diarrhea the next day. All babies are doing well now, and the mommies are recovering as well.
I know one thing for sure, it is going to be a very long time before I give Fiona green peas for dinner again.

I realize she looks very serious in all of these photos, but not only was she ill this weekend, she is teething as well. I know that a tooth is going to make its appearance very soon, probably within the next few days. This is making for one not so happy baby.
On Thursday we went back to the zoo with some of my favorite moms. The weather was wonderful – sunny, a little breezy, not too hot or cold. All the animals were out in their cages, and there weren’t many people around. One of the things I will miss most when I go back to work next year is the ability to go places during the week that are normally crowded on weekends.

It was a very pleasant day and Fiona napped in the car on the way home. Sometimes I can’t wait until she actually appreciates places like the zoo, and other times I just want her to stay the way she is now forever. She’s growing up so fast, it is scary sometimes.
Tonight when John and I were giving Fiona her bath, she discovered splashing with her hands. Up until now, she’s splashed by kicking, but never just with her hands. She was playing with her little Turtle pal, and she dropped him and started hitting the water with one hand. Then she started with her other hand. Soon, she was splashing with both hands. It was like a light bulb went on. Here is a photo of her in the bath. I LOVE this photo. I think it is the cutest picture of her to date:

On an unrelated note, she now has two teeth and it looks like more are on their way. She is drooling buckets and chewing on everything. She also likes to take the diapers out of their holder and chew on them during diaper changes. I moved the organizer out of her way and she still tries to get at whatever is behind her. Now we placed a book for her to chew on. I told John that doing this we are encouraging her early to read on the toilet.
Today we went downtown with my dad. We went to Palermo, Red Brick Gallery, and then the Taj Cafe for lunch. Lunch was pleasant, and then who should sit down at the table next to us but my friend and co-worker Craig! John and I have shared more than one bottle of wine with Craig and his wife Tamara. We chatted a bit before Fiona got very tired and I had to leave. Sigh. Such is the life of a parent with a small baby. As we were walking to the car I saw another co-worker, Ladonna, who lives around the corner from my parents house. I guess it was my lucky day!
On the way home Fiona fell asleep in the car and I drove around for over an hour while she slept. I’m pretty sure I swore at one point that I would never do that. Ha!
Here are more photos from this weekend. We just got a new camera, the Nikon D7000. It works really well with my little 50mm f/1.8 lens. It can take non-grainy photos at high ISO.
I realized after I went to bed last night that I forgot to mention two people in my post about our Canadian Family. I didn’t mention these two people because I do not have photos of them and then realized I should have said something anyway. They are Miriam and Reg, John’s cousins. They came to our wedding three and a half years ago and they make it possible for Grandpa Don to see this blog. So thank you, Miriam and Reg, I am sorry I left you out. Please know that we know you are there and we love and appreciate you!
John ran in the race, but did not train with me.
Those are my corrections. I sometimes forget things because I am tired due to lack of sleep. Or I write the blog post and want it to be timely, so I rush to publish it and leave out important information. I am sorry for this, but it will probably last as long as I am not getting a good night’s sleep. And speaking of sleep, Saturday night (the night before the race) Fiona slept really well. She woke at 12:45am and 4:30am. It was such a shame to wake her again at 6:15 to give Prevacid and feed before leaving (my mother watched her while we ran). It figures that the one day we need to get up early, she decides to sleep in. Last night was horrible again, of course. Contrary baby!
