Ice Cream

Yesterday Fiona had her first taste of ice cream. It was just a little taste. I had coupons for Baskin Robbins so we went with a friend. I had a scoop of Mocha Almond Fudge (my all time favorite flavor) and gave Fiona a small taste. She sort of liked it. She doesn’t really like super sweet things, so ice cream was not that interesting to her. Today, she ate her first shrimp. So far no side effects.

While at Baskin Robbins, I learned of way that Fiona and I can make some ice cream money for ourselves: We just need a hat for people to put change into as they walk by. We stood outside waiting for my friend and Fiona, who is a pretty serious baby, enjoyed watching the people walk by.

Almost everyone who passed her stopped to look at her and comment on her eyes, or her concentration, or her overall cuteness. Fiona is such an attention getter, I think if we just put a tip jar or hat in front of her stroller, we will make lots of money. In all seriousness though, I’ve realized that one advantage of having a small child is that she looks very advanced for her age, making people take notice of her, even though developmentally she acts more like her adjusted age . It’s kind of fun to have people think I have an advanced baby (until I tell them how old she is, then they make a funny face and walk away).

Also, I cut my hair. I decided that I am tired of having long hair, all I do with it is put it up in a bun or pony tail, so there is no point in wearing it long. It is currently the shortest I’ve had it in my adult life, chin length. At the end of the summer I think I am going to cut it even shorter, but we’ll see. Here is a photo of me with my new shorter hair. I am sure by the time I wash it it will not look as shiny and nice. Probably, it will curl like crazy, but I don’t mind. I miss my curly hair.

Last night Fiona actually slept through the night, 7:30 pm to 6:40 am, however her monitor gave off two very loud false alarms in the middle of the night, so John and I did not get to sleep through the night.

It’s been getting hot here lately, with temperatures in the 70’s. I know that 70 degrees is not really hot, but when you go from jeans and sweaters one week to shorts and tank tops the next, it can feel like a lot. My mom and I ate lunch on the patio and Fiona joined us.

She is not wearing any clothes because she is officially off the purees and on finger foods. She stopped wanting to be fed purees by spoon about a week ago. She started playing with the purees and then refusing them. So now she eats what we eat. The advantage is that I don’t have to spend time making purees, which have to be made in advance and are time consuming and messy. The disadvantages are that have to make lunch for her every day (so, less convenient), everything I make for dinner now has to be Fiona friendly, and boy is it messy. Fiona was quite the dainty spoon eater, but with her hands…let’s just say that even with bibs, I change her clothes multiple times per day.  She food gets everywhere, including inside her clothes and in her chair, underneath her pants. Just tonight she was playing and a chunk of couscous fell out of her shirt, a souvenir of dinner. Here is a video of Fiona eating her lunch. Most days I only change her clothes once and she spends the rest of the day with food on her shirt. She is not wearing a bib because she takes them off, thinking we are playing a game.

Here she is eating. It’s a little long, you can get the gist of it in the first minute or so. I need to learn how to edit videos (or just take the time to do it):

Our garden is finally coming along nicely. We’ve been eating delicious zucchini for at least a week now. Fiona got to eat a Peter Pan squash that I thought was from the store but I later learned was not. Tonight’s dinner included zucchini, some sort of yellow squash that is not crook neck, and green beans. The tomatoes are starting to sprout too, and I can’t wait for the corn, the pumpkins, the cucumbers, the eggplants, and whatever else is growing out there. There is a farmers market opening in our neighborhood soon, but I realized that soon I will not need it!

Here is Fiona playing with the green beans after they were picked:
