Finger Sucking

In the NICU, babies are given pacifiers to calm them when they get upset. I know there is a lot of controversy about pacifiers, with some people loving and others hating them. We have come to rely on Fiona’s whenever she starts to fuss but isn’t hungry. It’s orange and works well at calming babies (hence the name pacifier) however, we don’t want her to become dependent on it. Also, sometimes if it falls out, she fusses more.

So we’ve been giving it to her less and less. Tonight she was upset about something but refused her pacifier. Instead, she put two fingers in her mouth like she was going to make a cat call. We were delighted! If she can soothe herself that way instead of needing the pacifier, it will make life a lot easier for us. And if her teeth grow in crookedly, well, that’s what orthodontists are for.
