Silly Fi!

She rolls around all the time, usually back to tummy. Sometimes she gets stuck:

I think it’s funny when she gives me a doubting look. In this photo, she’s petting her panda like Ernst Stavro Blofeld thinking of ways to get rid of that pesky agent James Bond.

Speaking of rolling, she rolls all the time. She’s become quite proficient at rolling both front to back and back to front, and she now tries to move forward. She gets up on her knees and pushes.

She’s blowing kisses to us, playing with anything and everything, and is a great little problem solver. I couldn’t figure out how she was getting her pacifier in her mouth when she was lying on the floor and it was lying next to her. If it’s in my hand she’ll take it and put it in her mouth some of the time. One morning I watched her. She was lying on her back on her mat, she rolled over onto her tummy, picked up the pacifier with her mouth, and rolled back onto her back! I couldn’t believe what I saw! But I’ve seen her do it more than once, so I know this is her strategy.

I know there are lots of new things she’s doing but I can’t think of all of them right now.

Here are two more photos, one of her on her tummy and one of her cute little foot:

Fiona’s First Solids

Recently, we had a couple of small late season butternut squashes. We decided to make squash Fiona’s first solid food experience. I roasted the squashes and pureed one of them with breast milk. We fed it to her on a little spoon. She seemed to like it. She did not protest and even took the spoon in her hand. I think the bib got more squash than Fiona, but it was still a fun experience.

The squashes:

She really likes the spoon. We gave her squash the two nights after this and every time, she took the spoon and started chewing on it. We decided to give her a break for a few nights because it seemed like she was getting a little constipated. She was sitting at the table with us during dinner and she took John’s bowl, brought it to her mouth, and started chewing on it. She is also very interested in what we do when we eat, and follows the utensils from plate to mouth.

Sigh. My little girl is growing up.

6 Month Check Up and Fiona’s First Fever

Monday we had Fiona’s 6 month check up. I can’t believe she’s already 6 months old! Because we didn’t bring her home until the end of July, I still think of her as being a 4 months old. Her pediatrician is very pleased with her progress. She weighs 13 1/2 pounds and is 24 1/2 inches long. Her head is 16 1/4 inches around. She is a very average sized 4 months old, or a very small 6 months old. He considers her 6 months and is not adjusting her age because he thinks her small size is not due to prematurity, but to the small stature of her mother. He also feels her movements and behaviors (she took hold of his stethoscope while he was listening to her breathe) are more like those of a 6 months than a 4 months old baby.

She has really good head strength and control and mouth movements. She is a rolling fool, and I can no longer leave her lying on her mat while I make dinner because she will roll onto her tummy and stay there and then whine. She is also trying to crawl. She moves around and tries to get to things she cannot reach and has started playing with toys while on her tummy. She likes to touch everything, and scratch things with her nails (I think it’s her way of exploring texture). She becomes easily fascinated with very small details and patterns, such as the weave of our couch or the little paisleys on her burp cloth. I am finished wearing earrings or necklaces around her because she will pull on them, especially if they dangle. She also likes pulling on my hair (I am not so fond of that development). The other day, she grabbed her foot and held onto it while I changed her diaper.

She grabs things, plays with toys, likes to explore my face, and has started reaching for me and following me when I move across a room. She vocalizes and gives us lots of wonderful gummy grins. She laughs. She chews on her hands and is showing interest in what I eat.

We discussed solids and I will probably start her sometime this month. First I have to buy a spoon for her and then we have to make sure she can sit in her high chair.

She also has begun teething. Her gums are puffy, she drools puddles, and she chews on everything.

She received her 6 month vaccinations and a flu shot. She was such a champ, very little crying, got over it fast. Later in the afternoon it must have hit her because she began screaming and didn’t stop for two hours! Nothing seemed to help her; we tried a bath, rocking, nursing, going outside, different rooms, lights on, lights off, cold things in the mouth, etc. At the same time I was trying to work on a final exam that was due today. I felt so badly for her, at last I gave her half a dose of baby acetaminophen and some Gripe Water. She eventually fell asleep, and slept really well last night, but when John brought her in for me to feed at 4:30 in the morning (it was her first meal of the day, she basically slept through the night), she felt really hot.

We took her temperature and indeed, she had a fever. 104 degrees Fahrenheit. I gave her baby acetaminophen. She slept all day, only waking to nurse. She still had quite the temperature a few hours later so I gave her another dose. By evening, she was fine. The whole time she had a fever, she still smiled at me and played, but was more sluggish than usual. It was odd, having a baby with a fever who was not sick. Her doctor’s office told me she was having a perfectly normal reaction to the shots she received yesterday and to bring her for a visit only if the fever persists for more than two days. I am glad we are weathering this little storm. I feel proud of the way I reacted both yesterday and today. I did not freak out or get really anxious. I simply dealt with the situation. I also finished the final exam on time.

Right before I took this photo, she spit up into the middle of this rattle. I think it and the mat have been washed almost as many times as Fiona has.

She still looks so serious sometimes. I’ve decided that I am not ready for her to teeth or have teeth. The teething could last for months, so I can live without it, but I am not ready to lose those grins of hers. I love the big, ear to ear gum filled smiles. They make me so happy. She smiles at me first thing in the morning or after a nap. She opens her eyes, looks at me, and smiles. And it melts my heart. Or when she is having fun, splashing in the bath and laughing. I am not ready to lose that. She is growing up so fast. I can’t believe one day she will be walking and talking.

At least she still likes to sleep on her Daddy. I think they’ve really bonded lately.

This Week’s Milestones

I am almost finished with my first quarter as a graduate student. I need to finish a 20 page term paper and a take home final. Then I need to write a letter of recommendation and mail out holiday cards to everyone. It will be nice to have four weeks to just read and spend time with Fiona. Somehow, I never get tired of it.

Rolling is in full force, but only back to tummy. I can no longer leave her on her back and walk away. This week she also started to reach for and grab things that are just lying there (instead of being dangled in front of her). She started purposely batting at the penguin that hangs above her mat. Today she amused herself by making it swing. She also grabbed her foot. She likes to bat at and pull on the Whoozit. When she is on her stomach, it looks like she is trying to crawl, although I think we have months and months before that actually happens. John saw her pass her rattle from hand to hand. My mom told me that yesterday, she rolled back to tummy, to back, to tummy. I have not seen her do it though. EVERYTHING goes in her mouth. She started “chewing” on things, bringing her gums together and clamping them as well. I’m sure there is more, but my tired brain can’t think of anything right now.

Oh! She did sleep through the night on Tuesday, but hasn’t since then.

She rotates herself, don’t ask me how:

A new toy that she likes:

She is ready for arctic exploration:

I opened a box, and this is what was inside:

I LOVE her smile:

My mom was excited to tell me that Fiona was laughing. She does laugh. I love it!

Fiona’s first Chanukah!

She will also celebrate Christmas. I can’t wait to make Latkes, Ozen Haman (Hamentashen), Christmas cookies, and paint Easter Eggs with her. The good thing about being a mixed faith household is that we get to celebrate it all!

Her thumb healed nicely. We changed the band aids for two days, then just took them off. Fiona never even noticed.

Last, two videos. The first is longer. In short, I’m talking to Fiona and she is looking cute and talking back (in the second video).

Big Oops!

Today John let me sleep in a little bit. I slept from 6:30 until 8 while he played with Fiona and kept her occupied until it was time to eat again. I had two dreams.

I guess the extra sleep did not help my coordination as much as it should have because I had a little accident while clipping her nails. I accidentally cut her thumb. She whined for a second and it looked like just a little nick, but then it started to bleed more heavily. I pushed a tissue on it and then John held her while I cut up a band aid to fit her tiny digit, then wrapped the rest of the band aid around that to keep it on. We put a mitten over it and taped it in place to keep her from eating the band aid. She only cried while she was being restrained and barely noticed that she had anything unusual on her left hand. After the bath tonight we changed the dressing. You could hardly tell anything happened.

On another note, she rolled over today from tummy to back, then later from back to tummy! This is the first time she’s done both in one day!

She also likes playing with Panda now and with the hanging penguin on her activity mat. She hasn’t gained much weight this week but has slept a lot and seems bigger. For example, the penguin hangs just above her head. She used to clear it no problem, but now it looks like it will hit her face if it swings too much.

Here is a photo of her looking serious. The second before I captured a  photo of being very excited. That photo is so fuzzy, I will not post it.

And last, what post would be complete without the heart shaped puke stain on my pants? Is my kid talented or what?

Or maybe it looks like Africa. Who knows.
