Fiona got this white hat in the NICU. She had several because they somehow always wound up on the floor. I was looking back through some of her earlier photos and I realized that I can see her growing into the hat.
In the first picture, she’s swimming in it. By the last one, it fits snuggly on her head and she fills it out. I love her head!
Fiona is doing well. She’s breastfeeding more and more and growing. But I think she’s lost that wonderful new baby smell. Now she smells like her clothes or, more frequently, spit up.
She likes to give us one good night of sleep followed by a night of now sleep. Last night was a sleep night, but only after she didn’t sleep all afternoon and had bad gas. Poor thing was so unhappy. She would eat, then throw up and cry, then want to eat again. We rocked her and held her, walked around, bounced on the ball, laid her on her tummy, gave her chamomile tea (per doctor’s recommendation), but nothing seemed to work, so we eventually gave her Gripe Water. She then had some nice loud farts followed by a big poop and then fell asleep. She slept well and so did we.

My hairdresser Kristy and I always marvel at how my hair looks longer after she cuts it. It’s like she has hair-growing scissors. I’m considering getting a Brazilian Blowout.
Last night John and I switched shifts. He fed Fiona at 2am and I fed her at 4:30 and 7:30. I went to bed at about 11:30pm, after her last feed and slept until 4:30. Five hours in a row! I felt like a new woman. To top it off, Fiona slept soundly between her feeds and didn’t need too much coddling to fall asleep. It was like she was giving us a present in honor of it being her due date. She was wide awake all afternoon today.
Here’s hoping we see a repeat performance, or lack thereof, tonight.
Today is Fiona’s due date. If she had been born today she would have been a Leo. She would probably have come home with me right away and not spent any time in the NICU at all.
To recap her birth statistics, she was 3 pounds 10 ounces (1655 grams) and 16.5 inches long. Today we went to the pediatrician and she’s now 6 pounds 9 ounces and 20 inches long. Her head is 13.5 inches around (about 34 cm or so). She’s a nice size for a newborn. She’s bigger than I was when I was born.
The doctor said she is quite strong and is already showing signs of catching up to her actual age. For example, she’s slightly colicky and can hold her head up a little. Otherwise, she’s very much like a newborn. She got some vaccinations that have made her a little punchy all day, but she’s doing well otherwise.
I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time. Every time I see pregnant women I think, “That should still be me.” But after today, I won’t have any reason to think that because after today, I should not have still been pregnant (and yes, I know some people go over, not the point here).
On the positive side, I can now wear at least two pairs of my pre-pregnancy jeans one one pair of shorts. And I haven’t been exercising at all and have been eating ice cream and cookies on an almost daily basis. It must be the NICU diet.

Believe it or not, she does actually open her eyes sometimes. Like a typical teenager, it’s usually at night when we want to sleep. She’s practicing for college I guess.
We got a 2010 Subaru Forester. It’s white with a light colored interior. It has a sunroof and heated seats, fog lights, an automatically tinting rearview mirror, rear window wiper, and radio controls in the steering wheel. The driver’s seat has all sorts of neat-o adjustments including lumbar support.
It’s a great time to buy a car and we paid the MSRP plus tax and license, so all these extra bells and whistles that we don’t care about are basically free.

And it’s a manual transmission and fun to drive! Whoopee! I am going to miss my little Honda car, with it’s close interior where I can reach everything, it’s tight clutch and great handling, and it’s great fuel economy. There’s nothing like only having to fill up once a month.
*Sigh*
Hopefully John will take good care of it because it’s going to be his car now. Not sure what to do with the trusty old CR-V. Neither one of us wants to let that one go.
